Heart disease or illness is a term that we usually associate with aged men and women. However, recent studies show that thanks to an increase in a sedentary lifestyle all over the globe, lack of regular exercise, high junk food consumption and added stress at the school\/workplace, heart related disorders are no longer confined to just one age-group. In fact, teenagers and even young adults are among those who take medication to treat high cholesterol, blood pressure problems and other heart related illnesses.<\/p>\n

So what can you do to boost your heart health and does making those small tweaks to your diet actually make a difference? Yes, it does and the first step to eating healthy begins at home:
\n1) Making a lifestyle change and choosing healthier snacks over processed food helps you keep a tab on both sodium and fat intake. Contrary to belief, healthy food does not have to be boring. For instance, on Saturday nights, swap your calorie laden pizza for a home-made pizza of a smaller size made with all your favourite toppings.
\n2) Learn to be label savvy. Decoding the nutrition label on a food item is no small feat but it\u2019s important to read between the lines. Many food manufacturers these days position their products in such a way that a health conscious buyer is likely to think that \u2018fat reduced\u2019 products or \u2018zero sugar\u2019 treats are good for him. Just because, a product claims to have a lower content of fat, it does not mean that it doesn\u2019t contain ANY fat.
\n3) Stay clear of processed meats. Sure, it gets hard to say no to crispy bacon or freshly made sausages but processed meats are a serious heart killer. They not only contain abnormally high levels of sodium and other preservatives, but also a high content of salt and fat as well. You\u2019re better off enjoying a full Sunday breakfast not more than twice a month.
\n4) Get fat wise. Saturated fats and transfats are found in almost every fast-selling item on supermarket shelves. However, besides increasing the size of your waist, they also amp up the amount of bad cholesterol already present in your blood. Over time, these fats begin to line the arteries of the heart from inside and eventually result in a heart attack.
\n5) Cooking at home will do wonders for your body if you are serious about boosting your heart health. While there are many heart friendly recipes readily available on the Internet, you get the double benefit of experimenting with different flavours and being aware of what goes into every dish. Make some small changes like using more herbs, less salt and including a good portion of whole grains with fibre at every meal.
\nRemember not all fats are bad for you. In fact, nuts, seeds, vegetable oils and fatty fish like salmon each contain a good helping of Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids as well as monounsaturated fatty acids. By combining a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise and a wholesome diet, you too can maintain your healthy heart.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Of course then I was in primary school and martial arts was mainly for fun, but over time I became more serious about my training. In 1992 I started teaching, and by 1998 I had opened my own club. Over the next few years the club continued to grow opening in more locations and adding more classes at the old locations. These were of course old school and church halls, and teaching children of all levels and ages together, and adults of all levels together. As the club continued to grow I started to feel that there had to be a better way to teach - you would never put year one and year seven students in the same class at school, so why did we do it teaching martial arts. Of course you wouldn't expect them to learn the same things either. I also felt that adults weren't getting all they could from the classes in a one size fits all format. In addition to this, I wanted to take a more holistic approach to training, looking at all aspects of physical and mental health. In 2002 I decided the way forward was a full-time facility that could integrate all these aspects of health, and that would allow classes to be split by age and experience level. It took two years and a couple of false starts to find the right location, and in late 2004 work started on BTC. In 2011 we purchased and custom fitted our own building. Since then the centre has continued to go from strength to strength and developed a solid reputation as a leader in the martial arts and sports industry. We have also managed to maintain a friendly family orientated and social atmosphere within the club. My personal background was originally in martial arts, although I formally studied Science at QUT. Over the years I broadened both my martial arts knowledge and general knowledge of health and well being. My aim is to help every student achieve their personal goals and exceed their every expectation. I believe the enthusiasm and desire for constant and never ending improvement that I bring to my personal life and to every class is infectious, and will ultimately help every student in achieving their personal goal. Further, the holistic approach I take to developing a person as a whole, and the martial arts I teach as a whole, has led to the development of a very unique, innovative, and modern approach to a centuries old tradition. Our classes include the best aspects of body mechanics, sports psychology, boxing, yoga, tai chi, pilates, diet & nutrition and much more. All of this has led to the creation of a fun, safe, effective, and easy to learn system of teaching and style of martial art. Of course much of what has been achieved over the past few years is thanks to our great team, and the hundreds of loyal and passionate members of all of BTC's activities.
